Agility iMap version 1.0 approved!

I just got an email today that Agility iMap for the iPad has been approved and is now available on iTunes. I made a quick video showing off the app, it is only on iTunes right now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73vv_xzh2PI

Version 1 not very useful

I was happy to find Agility iMap, since having access to a library of courses modifiable "in the field" seemed like splendid use of the iPad for an agility judge. However, my expectations fell considerably as I discovered what the program is (not) capable of.

Agility iMap allows you to place obstacles on a course and to put numbers beside them, but that is all. The program does not draw a dog's path according to the obstacle numbers and there is no way of measuring the distance between obstacles as you move them around. Agility iMap is thus a long way away from a proper course drawing program like Clean Run Course Designer or Agility Blues. It might be used as an emergency course drawing program when you arrive at a site that presents some surprises (e.g., smaller than expected) but as it stands, one cannot expect to use it as one's main course drawing tool.

Other gripes:

Obstacle numbering could be considerably improved There appears to be no way no way of removing all course numbers in one go, no way of modifying a number, and no automatic update of other numbers when a number is removed. Basically, object numbers have no semantics, they are just graphical objects.
Obstacle rotation is not as easy as object rotation in Pages (but admittedly would be difficult to implement with small objects like in Agility iMap).
Tunnels are very difficult to resize and reshape, and sometimes block.
Table rotation axis is not centred on middle of table.

Minor gripes:

For non US users, it would be nice to be able to specify units in meters, rather than feet.
When course is full screen (e.g., a 120 x 90 foot course area), the toolbars hide the bottom. One can zoom in but can't zoom out to get at objects behind the toolbars - the course immediately springs back to full screen.
No undo facility, especially in map management mode where is it very easy to accidentally delete a whole course. Very frustrating!

Thank you for feedback

I always appreciate any and all feedback. Especially when it is as detailed as this. I am most open to feature requests and suggestions for improvement. I will try to get some of these things in the next version. My goal is for iMap to be the only course design program an agility judge would need.

Follow-up

I'm glad you intend to develop iMap much further. It really would be splendid to have a high performance course designing program on the iPad platform, which is ideally suited for use "in the field". That's why iMap was the first program I purchased for my band new iPad! I unintentionally remained anonymous on my previous post -- you can put it down to being an iPad newbie.

Map Data

I see you have a way to store data with a map. Can one then query this data to locate previously saved maps? Also, is there any way to include a custom field in this data? NADAC uses course names and it would be great to store the name with the map.

Yes there is data

Here is a screenshot of the data it currently stores with each map. It could be easily expanded to include other fields. I will add in the "Name" field. Probably many people would find that useful for just naming practice course they make or whatever.

Problems crashing

I love the program, and had no issues until today.....I am suddenly unable to open my library. When I click on the library icon, the program closes. I had not had any problems with this until I tried sending course data to myself and then opening the course. Ever since, I can open the course that I sent to myself, but cannot access the library without it crashing.

Help!

Fix for crash

I just wrote up a fix for the library crash.

This will be fixed in the next version.

iPhone / iPad version

I am pondering purchase of iMap but I have an iPhone and iPad - should I just pay for the iphone version that is currently on sale?

Thanks

Wait

Get the HD version. With the next update it will be a universal app running on both devices.
